Lyrical Line
When I first began to paint, I worked with large areas of color. Sometimes shapes would emerge, but I could not command them, and I did not think I could draw. As I practiced, I became comfortable with pastels. I could still work with large areas of color. Although it involved line, it was primarily a painting technique. At last, I began to draw in pencil, and then in ink. I love the spare delicacy of ink drawings. It is fun to see how few lines you have to include to define the form. I enjoy looking at paintings by Botticelli. His lyrical lines are like music. I also enjoy line drawings by Matisse and Picasso. Lines Thin, fragile, the edges of things seem solid: as real as rocks or trees, but, actually, they are as evanescent as waves on the sea. Is the wave the water or the lifting energy that passes right through? What defines that form from this? An intersection of dark and light. Lines, like fences, drift among us like favorite tunes from warmly remembered times.
